Roborovski Hamster

Dubbed “The Little One” of dwarf hamsters, it’s no wonder the Roborovski Hamster may seem to have something to prove! Don’t let this hamster’s small size fool you… this pocket pet is one of the fastest dwarf hamsters around. No larger than two inches in length, this tiny creature can live up to about three and a half years old.

The Roborovski Hamster’s formal name is Phodopus roborovskii. Like its hamster counterparts, this pet starts its day at dusk and continues to be active throughout the night. Because of its small size, it is best to house this little one in an aquarium rather than in a conventional hamster cage. You wouldn’t want him to squeeze through the bars at night and make a run for it!

The Roborovski Hamster is quite an attractive pet. Sporting a sandy brown coat along its back and a white stomach, the most distinctive feature are the white markings around its eyes. Some unusual varieties also have white faces.

This species of hamster make good pets for kids because they are naturally good natured. It is rare for them to bite or nip their owners when handled. Having said that, they are also extremely fast and agile so make sure your kids are old enough to handle the responsibility of keeping a close eye on them every second they are out of their hamster housing. One easy way to avoid accidents is to keep them within a confined space when they are out of of their aquarium. This way, it will be easier to find and catch them if they get away from you.

Another good thing about owning Roborovski Hamsters is that they are extremely social creatures so it is not necessary to keep them isolated in separate housing units. If you do decide to house them all together, remember that there is a risk that you might be hamster grandparents very soon! To avoid this, simply house them in pairs of the same sex.

Now that you know a little more about the “Speedy Gonzales” of the dwarf hamster world, we hope you will think about adding a Roborovski Hamster to your family of pets.
